Lake erie
It is the smallest of the 5 lakes in terms of volume and the most exposed to urbanization and agriculture. Being shallow, it heats up quickly in spring and summer and it is also very common to freeze in the winter. Its basin covers several locations: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Ontario and Pennsylvania. The soils around it are very fertile, so the crop is intense.

Lake Superior
The largest and longest within the whole of the Five lakes, but also holds the title of “largest area among freshwater lakes worldwide.” Its amount of water could fill the other four lakes of the group and it would still have liquid available to fill several more basins. It is in turn the coldest and deepest and encompasses Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario and Wisconsin. Most of its surroundings are wooded, sparsely populated and planted, because the soils are poor and the climate is very cold.
